After sorting through the wonderful juror submissions for the Midland Arts Association Spring Exhibition, “Texas Artists Today,” Catherine D. Anspon of Houston was chosen.

Catherine D Anspon

She is the executive art editor for the Houston publication Paper City Magazine.  Obsessed with visual culture from Pompeii to Pop and armed with a B.A. from Rice and an M.A. from the University of Missouri, both in Art History, Catherine is unsurpassed in reporting on art-world action from Miami to Moscow.

Her byline has also appeared in the national magazines Art & Antiques and ARTnews, where she serves as its Houston correspondent. She’s also our queen of all things social and hits the hottest events six nights out of seven. In her spare time, Catherine penned the sold-out volume, Texas Artists Today (Marquand Books, Seattle, 2010), photographed by PC colleague Jenny Antill.

We are looking forward to working with Catherine this year!

Juror, Ryder Richards, to Speak October 5, 2013

On October 5th at 4:00pm the Midland Arts Association, Midland
College and the Midland Arts Council will host a talk by Ryder Richards
titled “Drawing with Fire”.

The talk will be held in the choir room of the
Allison Fine Arts building on the Midland College campus.
Mr. Richards, born and raised in Roswell, NM until the age of 16, has
lived in the southwest most of his life. Receiving a Masters Degree in Fine
Arts from Texas Christian University, he has taught for nine years and been
a gallery director for seven. Currently gallery director and professor for
Richland College in Dallas, Richards curates exhibits, writes art reviews,
and participates in several collaborative art groups as part of his practice.
In a dubious effort to culture himself, Richards has travelled to
Europe several times studying classical architecture and the art of various
“old masters”. While retaining his affinity for these influences, Richards has
become increasingly interested in the “culture of honor” associated with
violence and power found in the southwest. Burning gunpowder, which
references his youth spent hunting, allows many of his drawings to explore
socialized forms of violence, often reflection on the highly romanticized
proving grounds of manhood.
Please join us for this fun and informative talk by the juror of this
years Midland Arts Association Fall Show.
