This dynamic three day class will explore the father/daughter duo’s watercolor techniques and their methods of painting that produces the vibrant and breathtaking images for which they are known.  The award winning artists will demonstrate landscapes, figures and florals in a 3 day, rapid paced class.  Registration is limited.

Schedule, Notes, and Topics

There isn’t an “official” 3 day agenda because  feel that it sometimes prevents us from accomplishing things.  We will move at as fast a pace as we can, and we will get as much accomplished as possible while having a very good time  This is a general schedule for the 3 days.

Classes start promptly at 9:00 am. and end at 4:00 pm, We will stay until 4:30 pm if people want to stay and paint and ask questions.

To begin Priscilla will go over the “rules” and how we and everybody in here will be tasked with keeping David and Jae on schedule during the individual review sessions.

Next everybody will introduce themselves and give a description of what they want to get from the class.  We will also review the pre work material and go over any questions

The General Schedule is:

  • All Demonstrations are approx. 45 minutes
  • Work on demonstration model: we will review with each person while you are working, 5 minutes with each person, which will take approx. 2 hours for each demonstration.
  • Breaks are 15 minutes
  • Lunch: 45 minutes to one hour
  • Homework assignment: (not likely, unless you want to work)

This is actually more than a 6 hour day, some things will move around a bit, which is why we don’t do anything really formal.  Some of the topics that we will cover are on the next page.

The class starts with a demonstration and each day will have a different demonstration of our techniques, and these will be three very different demonstrations:.

NOTE:  You should plan to start 3-4 small images of each demo!!

I. Day one will be a landscape demo by David:

After each phase of the demonstration we will work with each student, one-on-one.  Feel free to come and visit if I am addressing a question or problem that you are having.   Jae and David will circulate with each student to show you the techniques that David is demonstrating at each phase.

II..  Day two will be a figure study demo by Jae:

After each phase of the demonstration we will work with each student, one on one.  Feel free to come and visit if I am addressing a question or problem that you are having.  It will be similar to day one.

III.  Day three both Jae and David will demonstrate a flower, and then they will circulate while people finish the projects that then have started.

Topics to be covered during the 3 days,

  • Perspective
  • Cropping
  • Painting Wet Wet Wet! See the March issue of American Artist)
  • Painting from puddles
  • Simplifying a photo for painting
  • Finding the Focal Point
  • Painting Wet and dry

Material List

  • Arches* 140 lb cold press paper (A small block or sheets about 10” x 14”) plan on enough for 3-4 days of painting with numerous copies.  We start small and build to  10 x 14 pieces

  • Brushes:
    • A wide flat brush (around 1”)
    • A ¼” or ½” flat brush:
    • A small round brush (around a # 2)
    • A good firm scrubbing brush

  • Paints:(Windsor & Newton*)

Quinacridone Magenta/Scarlet Lake

Cadmium Yellow, Quinacridone Gold or New Gamboge

Indanthrene Blue

Windsor Blue Green Shade

Burnt Sienna

Raw Sienna

Olive Green

  • A watercolor palette
  • A water container and a good quality water sprayer
  • A roll of Viva © paper towels
  • Masking tape
  • Pencils & a kneaded eraser
  • Sheets of sturdy cardboard or foam core on which to tape your paper.  We do not use an easel in this class so you don’t need to bring one.
  • Small hairdryer if you want.  I do not recommend or use one on a normal basis, but sometimes in a classroom environment we need it to speed up the process.  I will always have one so it is not necessary for anyone else to bring one unless they feel like it.

*Notes: Arches 140# cold press paper is necessary.

Please try to have the exact colors listed as you will not get the same reaction and or result if you have something different. The paint colors are the ones that we use in the demonstrations and will be the most likely to be used in the sample pictures.

We do prefer Viva© paper towels for the lessons.
