Tia Harper
Tia Harper is an allegorical oil painter whose work blends humor, symbolism, and classical technique with a contemporary lowbrow edge. Raised in a military family, Harper spent much of her childhood moving around the world—drawing everywhere she landed and developing an early fascination with storytelling through imagery.
She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Advertising Design from the College for Creative Studies in Detroit in 2006, launching a successful creative career designing advertisements, billboards, websites, and print campaigns for major clients including MGM Grand, Popeye’s Chicken, COX Communications, The Henry Ford, Kid Rock, and even a White House dinner invitation. Despite commercial success, painting remained the constant pull.
In 2008, Harper left the East Coast for California to pursue painting full time. She apprenticed with master painter Andrea Rushing at the San Diego Academy of Art from 2010 to 2013, refining her classical oil technique while developing a distinctive narrative voice. She later returned to Michigan, continuing her studio practice and exhibition work.
Harper’s paintings are known for their whimsical allegory and expressive animals—particularly horses—used as symbolic stand-ins for power, instinct, and human contradiction. Her work juxtaposes historical ideologies with modern satire, resulting in imagery that is both playful and thought-provoking.
Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at Museo Dabawenyo in Davao City, Philippines, and in galleries and group shows across Detroit, Virginia Beach, San Diego, La Jolla, and Michigan. Notable exhibitions include a solo show at Thumbprint Gallery in La Jolla, CA, the Detroit Dirty Show, and a United Nations–themed group exhibition at La Bodega Gallery.
“In her paintings she combines ideologies of the past and present in stylistically lowbrow satire that is both thought provoking and humorous.” — Thumbprint Gallery
“Tia’s work prominently shows off her sense of humor and zest for life, and is certainly worth a thorough viewing.” — Cathy Ries, Empty Easel
Harper currently works under Wyld Horses Art, creating original oil paintings and fine art prints that celebrate imagination, instinct, and unapologetic visual storytelling.
